Four London boroughs share new government fund to bring derelict buildings back into use
Barking and Dagenham, Enfield, Hackney and Haringey are among 60 councils chosen for the new Derelict Buildings Fund announced alongside the Budget.
The government has named the 60 councils in England that will receive money from its new Derelict Buildings Fund, published alongside the Budget on 28 October 2026. Four are London boroughs: Barking and Dagenham, Enfield, Hackney and Haringey.
What the fund is for
The fund is meant to help councils transform prominent derelict buildings in their communities. Most of the money goes directly to the chosen councils, with a smaller part kept back for specialist support, guidance and technical help.
How places were chosen
According to the government's methodology note, councils were picked mainly on employment deprivation, using the Indices of Deprivation. Each one then gets a share based on its population, with a set minimum and maximum per council. Enfield is among the councils that reached the maximum. The biggest urban areas already receiving City Densification Funding were left out of the selection.
What happens next
Interim guidance sets out the fund's aims and the kinds of projects that can qualify. The government says further guidance on funding timings, project selection and delivery will follow in due course, so the individual buildings have not yet been named.
