London homes rank among the most energy efficient in England, with Tower Hamlets top
New government statistics on energy performance certificates show London's existing homes have the best median rating of any region, and Tower Hamlets leads every council area.
The government has published its annual statistics on the energy performance of homes in England and Wales, based on energy performance certificates lodged over the ten years to March 2026. Certificates rate homes from A, the most efficient, down to G.
London leads for existing homes
Across England the median rating was 69, which is band C. London shared the highest regional median of 70 with the North West, the East of England and the South East.
For existing homes, as opposed to new builds, London came out on top with a median of 69, the equivalent of band C, while every other region sat at 67 or 68 in band D. The statisticians say this is not surprising because London has a high proportion of flats, which were the most efficient property type overall.
Tower Hamlets comes first
Tower Hamlets had the highest median rating of any local authority at 77. It also had the largest share of homes in band C or higher, at 81 per cent, ahead of Knowsley and Salford.
London also had the lowest median carbon dioxide emissions of any region, at 2.4 tonnes per home each year. New homes everywhere had a median rating of 84, which is band B.
